La Boca

Exploring Buenos Aires

For my recent trip to Argentina, we flew into Buenos Aires from Singapore. And we had two days to explore this capital city - said to be the most European of the Latin American cities. During these two days, we took public transport - subte (name for metro) and buses.

We also took the Hop-on-Hop-Off bus, so to see more of the cities with the commentaries given on board. Price is 180 Pesos.
(Official exchange rate - 1USD = 8.6 Pesos. But you could exchange for a better rate if you were to check with the hotel staff or the locals. I managed to change at different rates between 1USD = 11 Pesos to the best rate of 1 USD = 13 Pesos at various places across the country in Argentina)

I have selected some pictures that I took in the La Boca district and uploaded onto this post. And I will add more pictures of San Telmo in the next post.

LA BOCA
(From Wikipedia)
La Boca is a neighborhood, or barrio of the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires. It retains a strong European flavour, with many of its early settlers being from the Italian city of Genoa. In fact the name has a strong assonance with the Genoese neighborhood of Boccadasse (or Bocadaze in Genoese dialect), and some people believe that the Buenos Aires barrio was indeed named after it. The conventional explanation is that the neighborhood sits at the mouth ("boca" in Spanish) of the Riachuelo.
In 1882, after a lengthy general strike, La Boca seceded from Argentina, and the rebels raised the Genoese flag, which was immediately torn down personally by then President Julio Argentino Roca.
Among sports fans, Boca is best known for being the home of world renowned football club Boca Juniors. The club plays their home matches in the Estadio Alberto J. Armando, popularly known as La Bombonera (The chocolate box in Spanish)
La Boca is a popular destination for tourists visiting Argentina, with its colourful houses and pedestrian street, the Caminito, where tango artists perform and tango-related memorabilia is sold. Other attractions include the La Ribera theatre, many tango clubs and Italian taverns. The actual area visited by tourists is only a few blocks long and has been built up for tourism very actively over the last few years. Outside this tourist area, it is a fairly poor neighborhood that has had many regular occurrences of petty crimes reported.

Shopping Street to do some souvenir hunting.

GETTING THERE
There is no Subte (Metro) station nearby La Boca. You will need to take a bus there.
Bus 29, 64 will bring you there, and the fare is rather cheap.
0.80 peso (80 centavos) per person.

Ice Trekking on Viedma Glacier

Thank you for coming back for the pictures which I will post for my recent trip to Patagonia.

And in this particular post, I will share with you the pictures that I took while we went ice trekking on the Viedma Glacier. Viedma Glacier is located close by to El Chalten, the trekking capital of Argentina.

A group of us, five in total, including our group leader reported to the office of the operator in the morning at 8 am. Then, we board the coach and proceed to the pier for the short boat ride across Viedma Lake to the Viedma Glacier. The bus journey took us about 40 minutes, and thereafter, it was another half an hour ride on the boat.

We were then split into groups to follow the guides for the ice trekking. Along the way, we were shown the different types of rocks found nearby the glacier. And after which, we followed the guide for the walk. We climbed a small ladder before stepping on the glacier. Then, we had to put on crampons before we proceeded.

The guide showed us the map, and then led us for our walk on the glacier. We had to step hard on the ice and it took a while to get used to it, as we walked down little slope and small uphill to higher level.

Overall, it was fun, and indeed an experience for all of us, who are wearing crampons to walk for the first time in our life.

NOTES -
Travelling to El Chalten.
You need to fly to El Calafate, from Buenos Aires, and then travel for about 3 hours by road before you arrive in El Chalten. There are many hostels, and some hotels located in this little town, which was really built for the purpose to support the needs of the various travellers or tourists coming here to have access to the trekking trails of the Patagonia in the Parque Nacional Los Glacieres (Glacier National Park, Argentina).

No prior experience required.
This is simply walking, and thus require no prior experience of whatsoever. Simply sign up and turn up at the operator's office. All is well taken care of. The duration of the walk is about 2 hours. And you need to pack some food for lunch as you will have time to eat before the boat come by to pick up everyone for the journey back to Chalten.

If you plan to go to Patagonia, do take note that a reasonable level of fitness is required. So, if you do exercise regularly - for example, running, playing games, etc for 3 times a week, then you have some basic fitness. However, it will still be a good idea to do some walking with a load of 7-10kg, and do some staircase climbing up a 25-40 storey building to improve on your fitness level before going for this trek.

One of my friends who joined me is actually a regular runner and he add more training for walking with a load and climbing the staircase, and this is his first hike. And he could make it for the trip, and still moving ahead of a lady who is 20 years younger than him,

Weather - It is very unpredictable for the weather there, and it is usually very windy along the trail. The wind is so strong , that it could blow you off the edge of the cliff, and push you forward ... It can be cloudy too. Warm weather clothing is a must.

Do come back for more photos when I can sort out some of the best pictures for you.

Join me on my next trip to India - Jul 2015.

INDIA Trip is confirmed for the 02-14Sep. HIMACHAL PRADESH , Lahaul & Spiti area.

Like to have more information on the trekking in Patagonia.
